Gentle Justice

Gentle Justice features the criminal law practice of Klaartje Freeke and Wikke Monster. Freeke & Monster encourage their clients to look beyond the question of guilt and consider the impact of what happened and their feelings about it. In their long careers, they have found that justice as it is currently structured does not benefit anyone. And they advocate putting humanity back at the centre of our justice system. Instead of the primary focus on law and punishment, compassion and a personal, sustainable approach are paramount for them. They do this by naming the pain and misery people inflict on each other and giving the associated, often deep and complex emotions a place within the judicial process. The first questions Freeke and Monster ask their clients are not about the facts, but about personal backgrounds, because they deeply believe that when people really feel heard, there is room for reconciliation instead of revenge or indifference. In every conversation, they search anew for a way to get their message across and to let their clients experience what it can bring to not only look at the other person, but especially to look at themselves first.
